I’m working on a Genesis Child Theme and I’m quite excited about it. It’s taking good shape. I’ve made child themes before but this will be my first commercial website based on the parent Genesis framework.
A WordPress child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality of another theme, called the parent theme, and allows you to modify, or add to, the functionality of that parent theme.
Why should you build your own WordPress (Child) Theme? That’s the real question.
- It’s an opportunity to learn more about CSS, HTML, and PHP.
- It’s an opportunity to put your expertise with CSS, HTML, and PHP to work.
- It’s creative.
- It’s fun (most of the time).
- If you release it to the public, you can feel good that you shared and gave something back to the WordPress Community (okay, bragging rights)
